The Hiatus, The High-Low Manifesto, and What "Luxury" Actually Means
Five months of radio silence isn't a brand strategy. It’s usually a crisis.
If you’ve been wondering where Head Goose disappeared to since March, the short answer is real life. The long answer involves emergency caregiving, middle-of-the-night IV medications, $30,000 in personal debt, and a stark reminder that life doesn't ask for your calendar availability before throwing a curveball.
Where I’ve Been (And the Cost of Showing Up)
Last August, I flew from St. Louis to California expecting to help my 74-year-old mother recover from back surgery for two weeks. Two weeks turned into six months.
What my family faced was a medical system that leaves post-op care to overwhelmed relatives, a secondary infection, emergency room runs, and round-the-clock nursing duties that my father and Medicare simply couldn't cover alone. I put my health, my marriage, and Follow the Goose Travel on ice to keep my mom alive and recovering.
I came back to St. Louis in January battered, exhausted, and carrying a heavy financial and emotional load. Rebuilding momentum after a year of zero continuity takes time, but I’m done hiding behind a quiet inbox. We’re getting back to radical transparency, unfiltered truths, and real travel.
The High-Low Luxury Rebel: "Why Not Both?"
While off the grid, I got very clear about who FTG serves. We’re stepping back from being strictly a "childfree travel" brand to double down on what we’ve always done best: Approachable High-Low Luxury.
Luxury travel has a gross pretension problem. It’s dominated by beige aesthetics, performative wealth, and the idea that you need a whole new designer wardrobe just to sit in a hotel lobby.
We completely reject that. My husband and I call our personal philosophy "Why not both?"
Why not stay at a five-star hotel with 1,000-thread-count sheets, but order a local delivery pizza to eat in bed?
Why not spend the morning on a sweaty, muddy waterfall hike and the evening drinking a martini with a caviar bump?
Why not wear a $13 Nordstrom Rack dress with orthopedic sandals to dinner, or a Costco button-down to a Michelin-starred restaurant if that’s what makes you feel comfortable?
If your dollar spends at a luxury resort, you belong there. Period. You don't need to be a billionaire’s daughter or live in a mansion to demand flawless service, high-end linens, and personalized care. You just need to value great experiences over performative fluff.
The Truth About TikTok "Advisors" and AI
The travel industry is currently flooded with two things: 20-something TikTok creators and hobbyists who paid a quick fee, watched a few training modules, and called themselves travel advisors overnight.
Creating aspirational videos of yourself walking down a beach looking over your shoulder isn't travel planning. Real travel advising is logistics.
It’s 25 years of experience in corporate operations, emergency response, and food and beverage. It’s knowing how to navigate complex flight disruptions, leveraging relationships with property General Managers, and digging through professional backend tools like Virtuoso, Hyatt Privé, VAX, and Tablet Pro to get you elite rates and VIP perks.
And while AI can generate a basic top-ten list, a computer cannot read between the lines of human behavior.
When a client tells me they want ten high-intensity excursions in five days, AI prints the schedule. A human advisor who actually knows you says, "You think you want that, but you’re going to burn out by day three. We’re building in two slow mornings and a pool day so you actually enjoy your vacation."
